The UN allows London to release Libyan assets frozen

The Sanctions Committee of the Security Council of the UN approved the request Tuesday, August 30th in London to release $ 1.6 billion (1.1 billion) of frozen Libyan assets to provide humanitarian assistance in Tripoli, said the ambassador of Great Britain at the UN.

Germany wants for its release around one billion euros of Libyan assets frozen, while Paris wants to free some five billion euros to help with the purchase of humanitarian aid to Libya. It is unclear if the UN gave the green light also in Berlin and Paris.

Chinese Ambassador to the UN, a key member of the Sanctions Committee, agreed after receiving approval from Beijing, diplomats said. In accordance with UN sanctions imposed against the regime of Muammar Gaddafi, the countries of the European Union and the United States have frozen billions of euros of Libyan assets since the beginning of the year. The Security Council agreed Thursday to release $ 1.5 billion of Libyan assets frozen in U.S. banks to fund emergency aid in the reconstruction of Libya.
